New construction

Rauhalinna smoke sauna

Year of completion: 2021
Client: Kakkonen-Yhtiöt Oy
Architect: OOPEAA / Anssi Lassila

Hirsityö Heikkilä crafted a hand-carved traditional log smoke sauna on the shores of Lake Saimaa in Savonlinna, as part of the culturally and historically significant Rauhalinna estate. The original sauna, which was beyond repair, was dismantled and replaced with a new smoke sauna designed by architect Anssi Lassila. Built using traditional log construction methods, it combines timeless craftsmanship with contemporary architectural expression.

The structure is made from massive 250 mm aspen logs with interlocking dovetail corners. The roof features an especially delicate covering of aspen boards, and the log walls are finished with an axe-hewn surface, showcasing the natural texture of the wood.
